What does "Holistic" Mean?
The term "Holistic" originates from the Greek word "holos," meaning whole, and was first coined by Jan Smuts, a South African statesman and philosopher, in the 1920s. In the context of therapy.
Holistic refers to an approach that considers the individual as a whole, encompassing their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Holistic therapies aim to promote balance and harmony within the individual rather than just treating a specific symptom or disease.
It's essential to note that Holistic therapies are complementary, not alternative, to conventional medicine. They are designed to work in conjunction with traditional medical treatments, not replace them.
By addressing the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit, Holistic therapies can help individuals achieve optimal health and wellness, and can be a valuable adjunct to conventional medical care.
What about Government Regulation?
The landscape of government regulation in the holistic therapy industry is complex and often misunderstood.
While many holistic therapies, such as yoga, art therapy, holistic counselling, acupuncture, herbalism, and homeopathy, are not government-regulated, numerous organizations claim that registration with their organization is mandatory in order to practice.
However, this is not always the case. In reality, many of these organizations are self-appointed gatekeepers with their own agendas and interests, and registration with them is not a legal requirement.
This can lead to confusion and misinformation among practitioners and clients alike. Furthermore, some of these organizations may have their own standards and requirements, which may not be aligned with the principles of holistic therapy or the needs of the clients.
How can we make a difference in the world?
By uniting to preserve and promote holistic therapies, we can collectively make a profound impact on the world.
We can safeguard the integrity of these ancient practices, ensuring their continued availability for generations to come. Through collaborative efforts, we can amplify the reach and accessibility of holistic therapies, bridging the gaps in conventional healthcare.
Empowering Individuals, Transforming Lives
By sharing knowledge, resources, and expertise, we can empower individuals to take control of their own health and wellbeing. This collective empowerment can lead to a ripple effect, transforming lives, communities, and the world at large.
Navigating the Complex Landscape of Government Regulation in Holistic Therapies
The world of holistic therapies is characterized by a diverse range of practices, each with its own unique approach to promoting health and wellbeing. However, despite their popularity and effectiveness, many holistic therapies are not subject to government regulation. This lack of regulation has led to a proliferation of organizations claiming to be the authoritative voice in the industry, often asserting that registration with their organization is necessary in order to practice. But is this really the case?
The Truth About RegistrationIn reality, many of these organizations are self-appointed gatekeepers, with their own agendas and interests. Registration with them is not a legal requirement, and practitioners should be cautious of any organization that claims otherwise. The Holistic Wellness Practitioners Alliance - A birth story.
I have been a holistic therapist for more than 40 years.
Some modalities I trained in and some I was practicing before there were even courses for them!
I have written many holistic therapist training courses that have won awards and gained approval or accreditation all over the world. I have trained thousands of holistic therapists in a variety of modalities and helped hundreds of people set up their own holistic practices and holistic training organizations. I am a dedicated advocate for holistic well-being and passionate about improving our health systems.
As a practitioner and a training provider, I am tired of paying exorbitant fees to join self-aggrandizing organizations that don't really do anything to support the holistic well-being industry and who I don't see doing anything to help improve the catastrophic situation our health system is in - so I started the HWPA.
If you are a holistic practitioner, I know you want to make a positive difference in the world.
I know you want to protect our modalities and make sure that all people, everywhere, have the right to choose their treatment and use traditional, holistic and natural therapies.
This is not another pseudo-regulatory body or self-appointed modality gatekeepers.
We are a community, a network, and a tribe, and together, we can be the change we want to see in the world.
We must. And we must do it now.
I hope you will join me and support the HWPA.
With Love
