Why are Industry Alliances So Important

Why are Industry Alliances So Important?

In the realm of holistic and complementary therapies, there exists a diverse array of modalities that don't fit neatly into government training frameworks. These include yoga, holistic counseling, empowerment coaching, meditation teaching, art therapy, and holistic integrated creative arts therapies, among others. Despite the misconception that these modalities are unregulated, they are, in fact, industry-regulated or self-regulated.Courses for these modalities provide graduates with internationally approved and industry-recognized qualifications, which meet the requirements to practice as a therapist, join industry associations, and obtain professional indemnity and liability insurance. However, the landscape of industry associations can be complex, and it's essential to understand the differences between modality-based and industry-based associations.

Modality-Based Associations:

A Limited Perspective
Modality-based associations are often owned by the same individuals who own training colleges within that industry. They may require members to complete ongoing training through colleges they own or have a financial partnership with. These associations focus solely on a particular modality and may only accept membership from graduates of their own training courses. While there's nothing inherently wrong with this approach, it's crucial to ensure transparency, value, and support for members. If a course is only accredited with a modality-based association, it may indicate that the college has created an association to provide accreditation for their own course.

Industry-Based Associations:

Protecting the Integrity of Holistic Therapies
Industry-based associations, on the other hand, are separate from training colleges and operate without bias. Their primary purpose is to protect the end-user and maintain the integrity of holistic and complementary therapies. These associations may offer training courses and professional development opportunities, but membership is not contingent upon participation. They welcome members from a wide range of therapeutic modalities and focus on the quality, educational content, course outcomes, scope of information, and integrity of the course provider.

Industry-based associations have a rigorous process in place for course providers to adhere to before approval is granted. This ensures that graduates receive a high-quality education and are well-prepared to practice as therapists. In contrast to modality-based associations, industry-based associations are not concerned with specific styles, techniques, traditions, or lineages. Instead, they prioritize the overall quality and integrity of the course provider.

The Importance of Industry Alliances
In a self-regulated industry, it's essential to have industry alliances that prioritize the protection of the end-user and maintain the integrity of holistic and complementary therapies. Industry-based associations play a vital role in ensuring that course providers meet high standards, and graduates receive a quality education. By understanding the differences between modality-based and industry-based associations, individuals can make informed decisions about their education and career path.

The bottom line is, industry alliances are crucial in the holistic and complementary therapy sector. They provide a framework for ensuring the quality and integrity of course providers, protecting the end-user, and maintaining the reputation of the industry as a whole. By supporting industry-based associations, we can promote excellence in holistic and complementary therapies and provide a safe and effective environment for practitioners and clients alike.
